It's always very interesting...

Who Do You Know Best?

On occasion I have the opportunity to present to groups and organizations on topics related to relationships management. We discuss what relationships are, what they mean, how you build them, how do you use them, why are they important and other associated questions.

It is always very interesting.

One of the questions that I pose to these groups is, “who do you feel that you know best in the whole world?” Might it be your spouse? Might it be a parent? Could it be a sibling? Do you have a best friend? Your choice for who you know best in the whole world.

It is always very interesting.

After they choose, I ask them to plan to see their selection as soon as they can with one primary purpose…to learn more about them. My point is that no matter who you know best in the whole world, there is always more to know. Ask them about growing up, about their parents, about their goals, wishes, memories, unfulfilled dreams, whatever comes to mind. In so doing you learn an important lesson about relationships. You learn that they are never completed once you have created them. You can choose not to enhance them, but they never are finished.

You also realize that if there is more for you to know about the person that you feel that you know best in the whole world, how little you really know about everyone else. So, others that you know “well”, you hardly know at all. It changes how you interact with people from that moment on.

Try it.

It is always very interesting.
