So, why do we like parades?

We obviously do, because not only do we have a lot of them they are also well established. The Elmhurst Memorial Day Parade, for example, dates back to 1918, some 108 years! Our Spring Road St. Pat’s Parade is one of the largest in the entire State of Illinois. We also have an annual Pet Parade and sometimes we plan homecoming parades too.

So, why do we like parades? I have some thoughts…

  • They get us outside and we love to be outside.
  • Whether you are marching or watching, you have a role to play and an enthusiasm to display.
  • We like to celebrate things and parades are celebrating at a high level.
  • Parades bring people together. At the parade and before and after, we are with family, friends and our community at large.
  • The kids love them! They like to march. They like to compete for candy and trinkets. They like being a part of something large.
  • They recognize significant events and accomplishments. Whether they spotlight service or success, they stand for something we want to acknowledge.
  • They have elements of pageantry which we enjoy. Flags, bands, floats all stand out.
  • They highlight the calendar year for us. New Year’s Parade, St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas! That’s a parade every other month!
  • They are free to attend. No tickets. Just come out.
  • We often get to dress up, whether we are marching or watching. What fun.

Why wouldn’t we like parades? See you soon.
